Valentine Cupcakes

The professor came home the other night to find me cutting hearts out paint swatches. Upon informing him of my grand idea to use them as cake decorations he rolled his eyes and said, "The paint swatches probably wouldn't be free if they knew that you were taking them home to cut them up and put them on cupcakes." I suppose he is right, but any place where paint is sold you can find free, beautiful, colorful paint swatches. I love them!

Perhaps you remember back in December I was shouldered with the task of providing Christmas cupcakes for Boo's class. Well, it happened again. This time it's valentine cupcakes for his class party. It's a job that I don't mind at all.

Not wanting to spend money on candy and sugar decorations, of which the kids will receive plenty, I drew my inspiration from The Barefoot Mama's idea of using paint swatches to create cute valentine cards (see her February 7 posting).

And, let me tell you, this was the simplest, easiest decoration in the world. Boo helped me cut out the hearts and when we were finished we had enough to make cards for his friends and enough to make some ordinary cupcakes look festive and fun!

Love the Modern stripe ... You're inventive!

I use chips for gift tags, but ONLY if they are leftovers legitimately pulled for a project. I couldn't just go in a store and take them.

I usually pull LOTS of cards, though, in order to cut the colors apart, tape behind, and make a much larger and more useful swatch. Those little squares are maddening : )

I love paint swatches! So fun! I've used them a bunch in just stashing around as part of displays but never on cupcakes! I think I'll try it one of these days! Kelly

Happy Valentine's Day!

I love this idea. As you know, I am an educator and I saw a lot of cupcakes yesterday. Let me tell you there were none this cute or creative (most were store bought). What a great idea!

What kind of cupcake tin did you use to make that shape of cupcake?

Very cute. Very.

Tammy -- I baked the cupcakes in a mini-cheesecake pan from Williams-Sonoma (found at a clearance store). I love the size (they're smaller than normal cupcakes but larger than mini-cupcakes) and the shape is so nice, too.

I absolutely adore this idea! Oh my, now I need to get to the home store and steal away all of their chips, LOL. So fun! My hubby's friend's son just came home from the hospital and I may use this idea to decorate the cupcakes that we baked them last night. :o)

I so love that those paint things are free, LOL. (I used to use them for matching activities and larger ones for flashcards when I taught Kindergarten...my preschoolers at the church used to love the Mickey head ones from the Disney line)
