Sweet Gum Balls

If you happen to live in planting zones 5-9 and you happen to have a sweet gum tree, then you'll happen to know that these prickly little guys have a way of taking over the yard.

It's official... our yard has been taken.

Love your pictures and your descriptions of life with your two boys. Makes me nostalgic for my own happy years at home with my three. My oldest two just went off to college and I am bereft. Youngest has PDD so I will doubtless never have a completely empty nest, but I am sad at the reason despite loving him.

As a Christian, you might be able to relate to my post today on the Christ child and things in daily life that echo our relationship with Him. Peace and God bless you.

They hurt like crazy if you step on them barefoot.

so funny, my son was just talking about the sweet gum balls on dad's farm where we will be visiting for Christmas!

In elementary school we used to paint the gum balls white and sprinkle with glitter to hang on the Christmas tree.

One of our neighbors has two huge ones in their front yard. They paid Taylor to pick them up one year when he was younger. They look like ornaments!

When I was a young girl, I remember my mom making crafts with Sweet Gum balls. She would wire them together into different shapes...I specifically remember her creating wreaths and poodle-like dogs which she would then spray paint and decorate.

Now, as an adult, I still live in an area plentiful with these Sweet Gum trees. In fact, we have a few in our backyard. One year, when our boys were smaller, we had raked up a big pile of leaves for them to play in, and then we discovered that we had inadvertantely raked sweet gum balls into the pile, too. Ouch!

Sorry for such a long comment...your post just jogged some good memories!

Merry Christmas!

So that's what those things are! Sweet gum, eh? I remember them from when I was a kid, but never knew the name of the tree. We didn't have one in our yard. Learn something new every day in blogland!

Is that what those are? I always wondered. I love those things - not stepping on them, but decorating with them. They are the flower that never wilts. Nice photos.

Yep, a familiar sight. Some kind of inedible Walnuts have taken over my yard. I have to be careful not to slide down the hill on them. Speaking of....the yard fairy blew the leaves off of my driveway yesterday. I suspect a neighbor did the good deed. I'm pretty thankful.

I remember being a kid and spray painting these things with gold spray paint for Christmas decor...anything in a large quantity in a bowl can look beautiful!

Did you know the seedpod of the sweet gum is a beautiful demonstration of God's perfect ratio found throughout all of creation? The ratio of the placement of seedholes one to another, will create the pattern of a spiral, also known as the Golden Mean? The pine cone is another good example! That's maybe why they are so perfectly pretty! It's the perfect ratio.
