Let Them Eat Cake

The supercake has been delicious -- we've enjoyed leftovers all week. I most definitely haven't mastered cake baking so all compliments must be directed to Hershey's who was nice enough to print a tasty chocolate cake recipe on the back of their cocoa box.

Now, let's talk hypothetically for a few minutes...

Suppose you know a mod girl who must contribute a cake to go on the dessert table at a very large and nice dinner next week. Keep in mind that this mod girl is not a cake baking diva... however, she really wants to present a delicious {and pretty} confection for the event. What kind of cake would you suggest? Please share... I know a certain mod girl would appreciate it!

Do you have a springform pan? Is a cheesecake an option to you? Kelly

Everyone loves German chocolate cake! I make mine from scratch, which actually isn't that hard. I just use my good ol' "Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook" recipe, and it wows cake-eaters every time! :)

Viel Glück! (Good luck!)

Ask Beth. She makes the best cakes. And her chocolate gnash icing is to die for.

Your cake looks pretty yummy to me.

Chocolate Caramel Cake.

It involves a chocolate cake mix

Caramels, butter, and sweetened condensed milk.

Simple and delicious.

Ok, this cake is decadent and impressive. It makes a nice three layers, and the frosting is thick and lovely. I was impressed with the mocha flavor; very rich. Go here... http://insideoutbecca.blogspot.com/2008/12/best-cake-ever.html

If transporting, I would skewer it with bamboo skewers to be safe, but I transported it on my lap in a cake box without that, and it was fine.

I wish I could, but I don't do cakes well for some reason. They are always too dry. I'm much better with muffins and bread. Sorry! :)

Mmm, I have a recipe for this lemon meringue cake...it is so good and relatively easy. Really. Once you make the layer cake, you whip up the meringue, slather it on, and fire up a little baking torch to toast the meringue. Sooo good.

I love your photos, by the way. They're always so crisp and...shiny, is always the word that comes to mind. :o) If I had the money I'd buy one of those cameras.

Two suggestions that are Never-Fail-to-Please family recipes.

Both are dense-ish, so not crumbly.

Both are baked in a bundt pan, so slicing is easy and presentation is pretty.

First: Pistachio-Chocolate swirl with chocolate glaze

Second: Apricot Nectar with sour lemon drizzle.

Email for the recipes if you're interested,

Flourless Chocolate cake from Joy of Cooking. Not super hard to make, no icing needed, and being that it is lovely and rich, one cake is enough for a large dinner party for sure.

Make a cake in a bunt pan...they make for a beautiful presentation. I use Pam for baking (the one with flour in it) and it makes the cake slide out of the pan perfectly every time. Good luck.

I always go with a chocolate pudding cake. It is NOT pretty to look at, but so yummy. It involves putting b.sugar, cocoa, and mini marshmellows, and boiling water on the bottom of the pan then topping with a choc. cake mix. Serve upside down with whipped cream. No frosting involved. E-mail for the recipe if interested.

You mean supercake won't cut it?

I love that Hershey recipe on the side of the box! And chocolate cake seems to be better after it ages a day, doesn't it? It just gets more flavorful and more moist. That piece looks delish!

My absolute favorite cake is Italian Cream Cake. It's a little bit similar to carrot cake and you use a cream cheese frosting that has almond extract in it. Heavenly! I also found a recipe for a citrus poppyseed cake that I made for my husband's birthday a few years ago. It was really good and pretty. If you want either of the recipes, let me know. I'd be happy to email them to you.

You're the queen of cupcakes; I've seen you turn out some really elegant ones. Is that an option?

Also, cake mix is definitely an option. My friend who's an amazing cook and makes everyone's wedding cakes (including mine) uses Duncan Hines cake mix every time. Shh! Don't tell.

Don't stress out over the cake part. Just worry about making it pretty, like I know you're so good at.

Another thought, I agree with Stevie Wren the chocolate ganache icing is always WONDERFUL and it is very easy to make. I have also always had good success with cakes I've made from the cake mix dr. books. Kelly

I LOVE making fun cakes for birthdays. I get most of my ideas from Family Fun magazine and I believe they have a website. I made a fishbowl cake one year and a pirate ship cake another time. With 2 boys, it's been fun to do.
One of the cakes that was really fun to do because no one knew it was the cake was a pail of dirt cake for a "messy party" we had. I just layered cake with crushed oreo cookies and chocolate pudding, ending with some crushed cookies and gummy worms sticking out of it in a plastic sand pail and the shovel was stuck in it too. Really cute.

Actually the hersheys cocoa cake the one you made, 'the perfectly chocolate cake' is my signature desert and it always gets raves bc it is kind of good in a retro, simple way. I make it just like the recipe calls for with the perfectly chocolate icing and do a double layer cake. Good luck!

I agree with Betsy, that particular cake is delicious and you won't be apprehensive about it since you have baked it before.

I am old enough to have baked almost every cake and dessert you can name and I think the Hershey recipe is among the best.

Don't bake at all! You can cut a sara lee pound cake into four sections horizontally, spread chocolate mousse between each layer, and then pour a chocolate ganache glaze over top. easy and delicious for company!

Wow, great idea, Gracelaced!

This time of year, I'd make the yummy pear cake recipe in my Martha Stewart baking book. Or, a lemon tart, not very difficult if you use a prepared graham cracker crust.

Your cake looks delicious!

A bundt cake is always nice - just sprinkle powdered sugar on it. Looks elegant. Most of my cake successes start with Duncan Heinz - nothing wrong with that!
