Nine of us gathered this afternoon... some were seasoned knitters, the rest were utterly clueless. {In case you are wondering, I was in the second group.} After two hours of patient instruction I am now casting, knitting, and purling with very little confidence. The final goal is a baby hat. My "assignment" for next Sunday is twenty completed rows. Three down, seventeen to go... it may as well be seventeen miles. My fingers have never felt so cumbersome.

I keep planning on taking up knitting. I've had friends who were fantastic knitters, and spent time in work meetings, and commuting making beautiful wedding and baby gifts.
However, I think I should at least attempt to finish the other projects I have started before I take up a new hobby.
Yay!! I have a feeling that your cumbersome feeling will pass and soon we'll be seeing your beautiful creations here. I'm so excited!
Oh I would love to be able to do this. I look forward to seeing it when you are finished! :)
Keep at it. Knitting will come second nature to you soon. Congratulations on learning!!
One of my friends just a week or so ago said she would teach me to knit. I would love to know how! But that's as far as I've gotten...just the invitation! ha-ha! Good for you to get to a group and actually learn. Keep us posted...I know I'll want to have a lesson after seeing what you create!
I found your blog through blogs of note, and I'm de-lurking to say that Knitting really does get easier and better with time.
A friend of mine from college taught me the basics a couple of years ago, and I've progressed to cables and all sorts of fun.
Keep up the knitting, you'll be glad you did.

PS: I enjoy your blog!
I could not get the hang of knitting! It requires too much coordination plus a dose of confidence. I can crochet - but no knitting needles please. I might put an eye out!
I think knitting is beautiful and would love to learn. I've never had anyone to teach me. I do crochet and can assure that your fingers will soon begin to behave.
I have not attempted knitting, yet. Still crotcheting. I applaude you for learning!
My mom was a knitter. I've grown to love it myself after inheriting all of her needles. When you get better at it, you will find it is addictive and hard to put down. I still make lots of mistakes, but nothing is perfect...that's how you can tell it is homemade!
Good luck on the hat! I have always wanted to try to knit, but lack the time right now. completly jealous of you! :D have fun!
Oh, for the love of knitting, being able to sit and knit without thinking about it.... but, alas no matter how many times I have tried (countless attempts now) I can not get it right. I bet had I had as many mentors around me I may have succeeded (vs sitting with a book in my lap trying to interpret the pictures) Good luck in your venture, I see a more positive result in YOUR future.
lovely way to begin a skill!

you can do it... I started a new project and feel the same way though,
love the textures and colors if the yarns in your image!
Now that you have mastered the sewing machine it's just a hop, skip, and a jump to knitting. I love to sew but it's always fun to have something you can take with you in the car to work on as well as in the evening when there is a moment before bed.
ha ha...i started to knit and was done with a cute little wallet and then started another for my mom which never completed...hope you will be done with your baby hat...!!!
all the very best dear...!!!
Sorry friend but I am here laughing out loud at you! Please forgive me. I know that this is totally different from just straight sewing, but look how well you have mastered sewing in just a few short months. I have all the confidence in you that you will master this too!
Happy Monday!
Hey girl! Congrats! You should check out my blog... I am "knitting" with the Knifty Knitter. I learned on it 2 1/2 weeks ago and I just finished my 5th scarf! I have never knit in my life! and its so fun to use!
cheering you on! Kelly
Puh-lease! Seems like you master every crafty thing you try in no time flat. I'm sure you'll be wow-ing us all with your knitting soon. :o)
So fun!!! I wish I could come!!
it took me all my life to finally teach myself to knit last year. it was something i'd always wanted to do. i'm so glad i did. it has done so much for the joy in my heart. i hope you find this much joy too.
How do you get to Carnegie Hall?
Practice, practice, practice!
I learned how to knit via a book and a desperate want for a sweater featured in Vogue Knitting about 20 years ago (it pains me greatly to say that--20 years ago). Took me a long time to get past that cumbersome feeling, but then one day it just clicked and my fingers have been flying ever since! Keep at it, and you'll get to the Carnegie Hall of knitting, too. Enjoy!
