Knitting Thoughts Together

Exactly one month and four days after starting my knitting journey {and after restarting the project at least a dozen times}, I completed my first little baby hat yesterday. Sadly, I did not get a photo of it before it joined the colorful company of many other itty bitty hats all boxed up, ready to be given to a local outreach.

I'll be honest... knitting has not come with the same joy and ease that I experienced with sewing. My fingers are so clumsy with the knitting needles, I can't seem to find a rhythm, and, oh dear, I am so tense -- knitting always seems to induce an achey back.

But, but, but... oh how I love the women who gather in our little once-a-month knitting group. We're such a varied mix of ages and personalities, situations and talents; we encourage one another and we laugh. Being a part of this group of amazing and creative women delights my heart and soul {despite my bumbling fingers}.

So, I will continue to plod along, little by little, with needles and yarn. I may never knit more than the same baby hat pattern over and over and over again, but I will use knitting as a tool to enjoy new friendships while deepening others, to reap creative inspiration, and to contribute {in a small way} to a local outreach. I am discovering that I can love knitting without actually loving to knit.

{I'm curious... is there anything in your own life that you pursue, not because you love it but because you love the relational, creative, or educational opportunities that it provides?}

Oh My...I am so very proud of you! This is how I started my serious knitting adventure! I read your blog from "afar"...can't even tell you the original seed of a blog that led me to you. Keep knitting. You will never regret it. Please read Knitting For Peace. You will be hooked (or "needled")

Love your blog!

In response to your comment, I would say cleaning and cooking for me are things that I do not because I particularly love them, but because they enable me to have people over to my place. I do like things clean, and I will readily admit that I love a successful (read: tasty, I'm just a beginning cook) meal, but the real joy comes in the people around the table with me.

well...knitting!~ I sit with my dear friend who is a knitting whiz, and I knit the same long piece over and over, then rip it out because I hate it. But i LOVE her : )

If it is any comfort, she is quite accomplished and easy in her knitting but still had an aching back after our last marathon session.

I also made many little fabric yo-yos to help a friend's project. Nothing about it was my style or taste, I don't enjoy quilting AT ALL. But I love this woman and her daughter, and it was a delightful day visiting and making little yo-yos to keep our hands busy.

In response to your question I would have to say bringing my children into their little "early education" classes. Not because of the fabulous experience it brought for them, but because of the social interaction with moms that it gave me.

I would make it through the parent child play time with a fake smile knowing that soon it would be parent group time which is what I was really looking forward to.

Well, I'd have to admit- it's watching sports on T.V. I'm not an advocate of this type of fun- but my fiancé is a huge fan of several sports teams. Living in Texas- football is a BIG social event. I certainly wouldn't choose to spend a Sunday afternoon cheering around a television, but it brings together- us, our friends and family, and lots of new friends. And, I've even found my own little pleasures in color coordinating my outfits, serving dishes and planning crowd-pleasing menus. Go team!

Keep knitting! Your fingers will soon relax and find their own pace!

I am not a social knitter, {yet}, but I understand your thoughts on just being together with people you love.

You go girl!
So can you get away with using the "knifty knitter" cuz seriously, its the coolest thing ever for us non-knitters! I made my first beanie ever and it took only a few hours! and in just about a month, I have made 12 scarves!!!! and I really only work on it at night after work when I'm watching tv...you should check it out, I got my loom set from Hobby Lobby, they have them at Walmart, Micheals, all those craft places! and it makes knitting fun! I am totally addicted. So far, I've sold every scarf I knit! I can't keep up!
Have a fabulous Fat Tuesday,
Abigail

I think that it would be so fun to be a part of a group enjoying the fellowship and time together as you learn something new.

My grandma taught me to knit 10 years ago and I have knit a few scarves and countless dishclothes since then! I do like the repetitive motion (your fingers will probably find the rhythm!), but I've never felt the urge to branch out into hats or sweaters or anything complicated. I save my knitting to do when we're driving on long boring stretches of highway. I admire your frankness! Keep it up!

I enjoy knitting because my family appreciate the things I make for them. They know it doesn't come easily to me (I get distracted, count wrong, etc.) so they know it is a true labor of love!

I have to admit that one thing I don't really enjoy, but do for the sake of the fellowship, is go thru the typically vapor-brained Lenten teaching series that get chosen for us. Practically all the adults in our church go to a small group, every week in Lent, and we all love the time together, the dinner, the BIble study, the prayers, but we almost always agree that we are SO DISAPPOINTED in which ever video discussion starter has been picked for the congregation. On the other hand, it bonds us even more trying not to giggle at a particularly silly talking head! I don't mean to be snarky, the fellowship is worth it...
