Lately, it seems that for every warm, sunny day enjoyed there are three gray days of rain. So, it was no surprise this morning when I woke to thunder and raindrops.
Yes, it was a dreary, damp Sunday afternoon. Boo lay around determined not to find something to do and Tukes had a meltdown because there was a raisin in his granola bar {he likes raisins!}. I was on the brink of losing patience... something must be done, quickly!
Clouds and damp withstanding {the rain, it seems, decided to pause}, we donned our old shoes and headed down the hill to the neighborhood creek {which really is nothing more than nicely established and sufficiently wooded rainwater drainage system}. And thus ensued the happiest hour-and-a-half of our weekend.
We tromped along the creek bank following it through the woods... stepping in mud, tossing pebbles in water, climbing on rocks, having a fine time getting dirty. Our wandering led us to a shady bend where the water gurgles as the creek curves. We found an old, rickety footbridge there. Boo crossed it, back and forth, back and forth, declaring that it must be more dangerous than Mary and Laura's footbridge over Plum Creek. Tukes decided that our little spot, "Wooks just wike Shady Gwade" {as in Farewell to Shady Glade, a favorite book}.
We wondered if there were any tadpoles around {probably not yet} or if crawdads were hiding under the water. Tukes found a "worhm" and Boo decided that he simply needed to sit on the bridge, for a long time, because "it's all such a pretty sight."
I stood back watching their delighted exploration. Somewhere between the mud, the splashing, the worm, and the rocks I concluded that all a boy needs is... the happy company of another boy... loving parents to give affection, guidance, food, and answers to many questions... the thrill of a brave adventure... and a shady, muddy creek with plenty of rocks for tossing.
It was two reluctant {and dirty} boys that followed me the long way home this evening. Stepping into the kitchen we removed muddy shoes, washed dirt from fingernails, made waffles for dinner, and watched as it began to rain... again.

Some of my happiest memories as a kid were rainy days. Between the old barn and the mud puddles--life was wonderful. (I'm a huge fan of the Little House books, too!)
When the kids visit their grandparents on the farm, they too are always wanting to take a trip down to the creek. We've seen crawdads, snakes and frogs - and the kids try to catch them (except for the snakes). At times we've even been able to swim in the creek when the water is high enough - but that was before mom got all wigged out when she read that the snakes around the water there were actually cotton mouths!
There is so much to do with a creek...no wonder kids of yester-year didn't need many toys.
How sweet! And I love those muddy pics!
What a great post and how true. Get outside, get dirty, play and enjoy nature. With kids it seems the muddier, the better.

Oh and to end the day with waffles is just... perfect.
How how fun! I think there is mud in those eyelashes, too! When it rains very hard we get a little 'lake' between our back yard and the neighbors. It can get about knee deep on a child and we've had many fun hours there over the years!
Kids need to get dirty. It's essential! I love these photos.
Ah- love it. Rain, mud, splashinig and adventure. You sound like such a great mom.
What a delightful, simple Sunday, Modgirl! Wonderful writing! I can't imagine how much you and the professor and the boys will enjoy this post in years to come. Making memories is such a sweet, sweet thing. Kelly
Rainy days can be so great! Muddy pics are the best!

I've really been on a journey lately towards being a "free"er mom...savoring even the messes and inconvenient activities of childhood. I'm so proud of you and inspired as I think of you treasuring a day of rain.
What a good mom, I hope I'm a good mom someday! You play with them, which is so good.
I love what kind of mom you are!
