Reluctant Summer

Things have changed. It happened suddenly, practically overnight.
The cool, pleasant air of springtime has fled.
So have the sun's gentle, warm rays.

The sun shines with a hot intensity now.
Heat and humidity hang thick.

We slap at mosquitoes, adjust thermostats, let down window shades...
and eat snow cones at suppertime on a Sunday evening.

While the calendar shows that it is officially still spring, the truth is...
the next four months of life in the Deep South have arrived... summer.

I am reluctant to embrace her relentless presence.

Relentless is the perfect word to describe southern summer heat and humidity. I sat outside chatting with my sister this weekend while the mosquitoes tried to eat me alive. These things I do not like about summer!

Love your prose.

MG ~ come up today for a visit! It's cool this morning...I have goosebumps while I sit here with the window cracked a bit and had to go put on my robe and some socks!

A few years ago we were in Louisiana ...in August. Oh my. It actually took me a day or so to get used to breathing the thick, humid air.

But goodness, everything was so lush and the people so friendly. I think the humidity must make you all very pleasant individuals! (Maybe that and air conditioning??)

Betsy, don't tease us! I'm with you, Modern Girl. I love all the seasons, but I think the heat of summer, the relentlessness of it, makes it my least favorite!

Ah, yes. I do know how it is! I've become wimpier and wimpier about tolerating heat as time's gone by!

Summer is SO long here - it's like March-October (or November!). I've got pics of the girls in their little backyard pool in February this year!! It was HOT!

Oh, but I do love the long daylight - sunset at 9pm!

Hydrangea photo was delicious.

Beth -- I KNEW you would love the hydrangea. Wish I could send you a big one.

There is a brief moment or two each February when I think how nice it would be to live a little further south. Spring is a long way off in Michigan in February.

But then I remind myself of your long, hot humid summers and am more than content grabbing another cup of coffee and tucking in for the rest of our winter.

We're in the midst of a coolish spell and still using the furnace at night (and AC during the day).

I love my four seasons of Michigan. :-)

Have you ever been to Texas?!?!? I am already anticipating that the summer months ahead are going to be brutally HOT here!
