My Friend Dolls

Yesterday, Miss Brown Eyes brought her mother's old My Friend Dolls {Fisher Price} when she came to our house to play. Oh, the nostalgia! Seeing Mandy {the blond} and Jenny {the brunette} stirred up so many of my own childhood memories.

It was the little details, like the rubber slip-on shoes...

And, the rosebud cloth covered bodies that sparked happy remembrances of girlhood play.

My sister, Anna, had Mandy and I, quite appropriately, had Becky the redheaded My Friend Doll. My mom used to tell us to take care of our dolls because someday we would want to give them to our own little girls. How ironic that between the two of us we have four boys and no girls!

But, aren't mothers almost always right?! If this little one that I am carrying happens to be a little girl you can rest assured knowing that I will turn my parents' basement upside-down in search Becky!

Oh my!!! The faces and hair don't ring a bell but that little brown calico dress and the rubber slip on shoes and the rosebud covered soft fabric body sure do!!! Maybe I had Becky too and that's why the other two don't look familiar to me. I don't know but I do know that I had a doll that somehow was like these and this does stir up wonderful memories!!! My redhead had the same redhead as you, except I thought her name Mandy. We had the boy doll whose name I've forgotten as well as Jenny with the brown hair. I've always loved these dolls. The grands play with them now.

Very cute dolls. I can't believe they still have their shoes1 Those are usually the first thing to be lost.

Oh, fun memories! They are so cute! Wouldn't it be fun to have a reason to look for Becky in the basement!

This made me smile. I think Mandy and Becky are definitely in Mama and Daddy's basement somewhere. This also made me think about Alieta's doll- she loved her My Friend doll so much.

Stevie -- Mandy is the blond, Jenny the brunette, Becky the redhead, Mikey is the boy, and Nicky is the African-American one.

Your grands are lucky girls to have these to play with. In my opinion they, hands down, beat the pricey American Girl dolls, especially for the younger girls.

I was just thinking how fun it is to see dolls on your blog...and that perhaps we'll be seeing more of them in the future. :)

I love this post, Christian! Alieta's Jenny doll was taken everwhere with her and after lots and lots of loving, became so pitiful looking --- despite everything I did to help her look better. I decided to purchase a "new" Jenny doll for either her birthday or Christmas, but it just didn't have the same "special-ness". The original was always preferred over the new doll. I hope your #3 gets to play with your Becky! :)

Such beautiful dolls! while pawing through my parents' attic the other day I came across some things from my childhood. My mother, in her gentle way, reminded me that any time I want those things, maybe for my child (I'm an only child, so the only hope for grandkids!), they would be ready and waiting!

I'm thinking with your sewing skills you could whip up some adorable little outfits for these cuties!

Lola actually has my Jenny doll and all of her clothes and accessories now! I tried to buy her a new one on ebay, but they were so expensive!!! So she is happily playing with my loved-to-death one.

Oh, those shoes! Too adorable.

And I have a sneaking suspicion that you will be raiding your parent's basement before too long.

Not that I could know anything, really. I'm just saying...

I recently received the boxes in which my dolls were kept in the attic for many years. Mandy and Jenny (renamed) were in there, and now they're my daughter's favorite dolls. Speaking of the shoes being the first to go, I KNOW that I was meticulous about keeping the shoes with the dolls, and yet when I opened the boxes, I found only one shoe.
