The Kitchen, Shiny and New

Renovations complete, except for the floors which we'll tackle when we put in new flooring throughout the house. Do not let these photos lull you into any false perceptions... my kitchen is rarely this neat, clean, and clutter-free.

Beautiful! Worth the wait? I'm sure it was. I do want to ask if you saved a ton of dough by doing it yourself? Always wondered if the payoff was as good as people say.

Are those your original cabinets, just painted? I have some that look some like that in a dated '80's stain, so I'm curious.

Momof5 -- Yes, we did save a bundle by doing the work ourselves... the professor was even able to figure out the plumbing on his own.

Our biggest expenditures were, by far, the new appliances (stove, dishwasher, microwave, and toaster oven) and fixtures (porcelain coated iron sink and Moen faucet). However we saved abundantly by opting for a premium laminate countertop with custom edge rather than solid surface or granite counters. The professor was able to install them himself which was a huge savings. We also opted to paint (inside and out) the existing cabinets. This was labor and time intensive but cost us very little, as opposed to paying thousands for new cabinets.

Ellen -- Yes, the cabinets are original. They are oak but had a very honey-orange'ish finish on them that we did not care for at all. We tested several different stains, thinking we might strip them and restain them but in the end we liked white the best -- it really lightens up the room.

I must say I'm not crazy about the little arched insets on the cabinets -- I would prefer something more linear and simple -- but I'll happily live with the arches to save us the thousands of dollars that new cabinetry would cost.

Just read your long response about doing it yourself...we did those custom edge laminate granite-look-alike countertops and LOVED them.

Thank the LORD for hardworkin', undaunted, do it yourself husbands!!

I love your new kitchen (and your blog!) just wanted to share the link to this amazing lighting place - the website is gorgeous but I just bought these for my kitchen and they are absolutely delicate and breathtaking in person.

Ok, am I the only one who heard a chorus of angels upon opening these pics?? Holy Moley!! Totally beautiful. What is so inspiring is that you guys did it on your own. I so wish Daniel and I were more handy that way. I can't wait to see what this new kitchen cooks up! :)

Beautiful, beautiful. Nice and crispy clean! It turned out so wonderful, aren't you so happy?

We're getting closer. End of soccer season/playoffs right now, then trim and wood floors. But I'm "in" and cooking!

Love and hugs - sorry I've been so busy! I'm so happy I visited you tonight!
