Dinner and a Movie

Baby, it's cold outside! We expect our first freeze tonight. It was the perfect evening to stay home.

For dinner we tucked into stromboli stuffed with ham, provolone, and spinach. With a name like stromboli there were some among us convinced they wouldn't like it... they ate every crumb. It paired nicely with potato soup and salad greens.

For dessert we polished off the first half dozen of cinnamon rolls intended for tomorrow's breakfast. They were fresh and gooey, who could resist?!

After our supper the professor pulled out the old Bell and Howell Filmosound 16mm projector.

He screened the boys' first showing of...

The Lorax by Dr. Seuss on our living room wall.

Oh the excitement! The boys loved the show...

And the mechanics of the projector!

Yes, cold Friday nights are best for staying home.

Cool! My husband and I were just talking about the projector movies we saw in elementary school!

Haley -- The Filmosound (LOVE that name) is exactly like a 16mm projector that your school would've used. The professor bought it 12 years ago at a surplus sale because he thought it was cool. When he was a bachelor he kept it on his mantle! Shortly after he bought the projector he found a ton of old 16mm films in a dumpster at an elementary school -- a friend who worked there tipped him off to them. The two dug around in the dumpster in the dark for who knows how long. He came home with many films your own school probably owned -- lots of Dr. Seuss, Where the Wild Things Are, Shane... I can't remember the rest. The films are in good condition, the projector really needs new vacuum tubes to improve sound quality but overall it works great.

I love the movie projector! (And I have to confess to HATING those when I had to use them in class. I was bad at splicing movies when there were breaks!) The fascination of your boys is a joy to see!

amen on staying home!

the dinner looks delicious. I am actually making French bread pizzas in the oven right now.

How spectacular the story of the professor finding that projector and the films! Wonderful.

I went to a home tour today where there were pictures of George Washington and Abe Lincoln displayed that had also been rescued from a school dumpster! Maybe I need to start checking to see what people at my school are throwing away! :)

Hope you're having a lovely Saturday! Kelly

p.s. I like the drill sitting by the projector. Looks like our house.

Also, your tree looks wonderful! I'm off to decorate after lunch.

Ah, that sounds like such great fun and making fond memories! It's like bringing the drive-in inside!

I can FEEL the texture of the metal housing! We used to watch 1940s Moody Science movies in our little church growing up, and most-likely they were shown on a Filmsound

I love this little photo essay, Boo's intense interest, Tukes' delight.

We had stromboli this week, too!

What wonderful fun!!! I can't imagine the magical excitement that must have overcome your boys! Those are memories they'll treasure forever!

And the stromboli and soup and greens...oh yummy! You are quite the cook.

fun post! I assume that it was the professor who thought he wouldn't like the stromboli?

The picture of your son smiling with glee and holding his little bear is beyond precious.

Film projectors! Love them.

So...once the film was finished, did you let them watch it backwards??

So, I made the stromboli last night and it was excellent! We loved it . . . and had tons of leftovers which is great, since I'm so bad at making enough for leftovers. Thanks for the recipe link!
