Pondering Rice Pudding

I've been thinking about dessert all day, and rightfully so I'd say, after choking down a serving of glucola and enduring an arm-bruising blood draw at the doctor's office this morning. {By the way, I did pass my glucose tolerance test. Phew!}

When we were bashing around New York a few weeks ago the professor and I happened upon a place one evening that totally intrigued us. By appearance we thought it was an ice cream parlor, but the name says it all. Y'all, Rice to Riches is a storefront that sells rice pudding... only rice pudding. This boggles my mind. Can a place in NYC really make it simply by selling different flavors of sweet, creamy rice? Apparently so. Is rice pudding really that good? I guess it is.

If we hadn't just stuffed ourselves with pizza at Lombardi's we would've stepped right in and sampled rice pudding, but alas we were full, very full. Believe it or not, I've never had rice pudding. Never. So, tomorrow I'm planning to stir some together for us to enjoy as we usher in the New Year.

ooooohh - what a fascinating post! Don't worry, I didn't grow up with rice pudding, but now as an adult, I adore it; I still find it hard to believe a restaurant can specialize it it.

I like the baked kind best, with a bit of a caramelized crust on top (it just so happens that recipe is in More with Less!). There are serious opinions about rice puddings, though. My advice is to put maraschino cherries on whatever version you make.

I love rice pudding. I personally haven't made it. But I have had some amazing rice pudding over the years.

Oh, you have to see this post by Anna since you are talking about rice pudding. I am going to link to it on my blog as well, but thought I should share it here too!

And it's a cute little place, too! I think I had rice pudding once as a kid....can't even remember what it tasted like. You'll have to let us know! :)

Is this some kind of 6 months pregnant trend? I cannot get enough rice pudding lately! I'm also wanting to make my own.

PS was supposed to take sugar test this week but the office screwed up, now have to take it next month.

PPS there is also a restaurant in NYC that sells nothing but hummus, all different flavors!

NCavillones -- I'll meet you for hummus and rice pudding! It wouldn't take much at all to tempt me on a return trip to nyc! I am seriously overwhelmed by what all is available there, on practically every block. What a cool place!

Sallie -- Thanks for the link. Anna's rice pudding is beautiful. Now I'll have to look up the Joy of Cooking recipe.

I ADORE rice pudding! BUT...rice pudding comes in many varieties...and I only like a certain kind...not too sweet...pure vanilla...a touch of cinnamon...NO raisins...I will be curious to see if you like it!

i had some of the most phenomenal rice pudding ever in New York.

And yes, there are many storefronts in NYC selling just one thing. Flipside is, every time you return to the city many places you remember have been replaced with something new.

I think I've heard of that place - all different flavors? toppings? I think it's doing well too...

A niche, I guess... and fun :)

I also saw the PVS post with the utterly stunning photos. Really made me want to whip some up!

Christian, I *saw* this place! At least I'm pretty sure it's the same one. I didn't remember the name but we saw a place (back in 2006 so it must be doing well!) that we also thought was an ice cream place and then discovered it was all different flavors of rice pudding! So wild!

AND I love Lombardi's! I've been everytime I've been to NYC. So fun. I love that y'all went there too and enjoyed it.

Regarding the glucose test, I was wondering aloud the other night why they can't simply give you a menu such as "if you'll eat five little debbies, then a pint of ben and jerry's and a sleeve of oreos, then come in and take your glucose test and you'll be ready to go!" why would that not work? Plus you might have the bonus of getting sick of one of those items and not wanting it for many months to come and would that be such a horrible thing . . . just the rambling wonderings of a 1st time pregnant mama. :)

Hope your rice pudding was good! I've never had it either. Kelly
