Before :: After
The double bathroom debacle is far from being resolved. Yes, the professor has repaired and painted the rotten walls, Jorge and Jose gave us beautiful new tile, and I'm extremely thankful to have showers and toilets that work after thirteen days of driving .7 miles to my in-law's house... but there are still plumbing issues to navigate, vanities to build, and sinks to install. Of all the home renovation projects that we've taken on over the years this double bathroom renovation has been the most painful.
The renovation sprawl has slowly crept from our partially intact bathrooms filling empty corners and floor space in the master bedroom, coating every surface in the house with dust, and, finally, this weekend the sprawl took over the kitchen. Paint cans and brushes, crown molding and quarter round, saw horses and drop clothes, Christmas candy and school papers, toothbrushes and toiletries, and wet leaves all over the floor, you name it and, I assure you, it was there. Truly, my brain felt as cluttered and dusty as my kitchen counters.
"Go shine your sink!" Today I took the Fly Lady's words to heart. Today Mrs. Meyer and I took back the kitchen. We threw open the windows {hello, sunshine and 65 degrees!}, cleared the counters of everything, wiped away dust, crumbs, and paint splatters, and decluttered in the most significant way. Then I took vengeance on the floor. When the professor walked in this evening he commented, "The kitchen sure looks nice!" Yes, yes it does... and now I can think once again!

How sweet that your husband noticed the clean kitchen! I read Fly Lady too, and though I couldn't keep up with all the "rules" I def. took the sink thing to heart.
Your bathrooms sound amazing already, crown molding? Can't wait for pictures!!!
65?! No way! It always feels good to do a little sprucing. Looks great!
ahhh, flylady to the rescue agian!
We just completed the "big" work of our kitchen renovation project that started May of 2008...I will likely be in the ground before the "small" stuff of the project is finished. Actually, it is a miracle the big stuff didn't put me in the ground already!
I totally get the sprawl that you speak of, the upheaval, the dust....
It takes special people to do this, kinda-insane-special, but oh, the finished product, the war stories, the memories, the character. Yah, the character, renovation builds character. I just keep telling myself that.
I know your "pain!" We have a 15 week old and are in the middle of a WHOLE house remodel! We are living in our basement, which {THANKFULLY!} has a bath and kitchen---but, oh my, it gets cluttered from time to time--
and I just have to purge!
Hope your remodel continues to move...we stalled a bit upon the birth of our child...ready to go again for sure!
Yes - my favorite quote: "The state of my kitchen speaks to the state of my mind." For real.
It's always selfishly comforting to know that other people's kitchens (houses!) get taken over by clutter, too :-) And, yes, the deep breath of relief after a hefty decluttering. Ahhhh.
I love the flylady! I need to live by her words more often.
heh. renovation. What a mixed blessing. I love my house now, but the process was brutal.
Good for you for taking back the kitchen! It took me a long time to figure out that messy house = messy mind for me.
It's not 65 here today - more like 37, but I'm still feeling spring-ish and the sunshine is glorious!
I understand. COMPLETELY. Ours has escalated and nearly every room is fully aware of what is happening. The children draw lovely pictures in the sheetrock dust on furniture tops...and I...I had a little break down last night. I'm better today. :)
Ah...I love a good spruce up!
And 65 degrees? Sounds divine.
fly lady is wonderful. i took back our kitchen yesterday too. :) it does make a body feel better. i also nearly completely cleared off my desk at work. i can think better. kelly
