Let Him Eat Cake... and Donuts, Too

Turning four was lots of fun, although we were not permitted to sing the Happy Birthday song.

Miss Brown Eyes delivered chocolate donuts and a balloon to the birthday boy... oh my, she does know the way to this little man's heart!

For those of you who know Tukes one glimpse at his birthday cake will make you smile, then giggle, and, finally, nod knowingly. I can't imagine a cake that better captures my little guy's funny, laid back, creative personality.

In keeping with the birthday tradition that the professor's mother established several years ago with big brother, she took Tukes to the bakery so that he could pick out his own birthday cake. It seems that none of the cakes were just right so he proceeded to design his own. Of course Khaki let him... she is a grandmother after all. Incorporating the whimsy of cupcakes with his serious love of chocolate, Tukes brought the best of both worlds together into one.

Needless to say, after donuts, cake, and ice cream {oh, and there were some cookies involved as well} we're facing major sugar withdrawal today.

what a cool cake! I might just copy that format for a birthday around here. Nice candles, too. I just usually get the boring kind at the grocery store, but those are much cooler.

Margo -- Aren't the candles fun?! They're rather Dr. Seuss'ish I think. I don't know where my mother in law found them, I'll have to ask her.

The birthday cake is great. We have a giant twisty candle that we've always put on each birthday cake. But now, after 4 years, there is very little of it left, so we need to find a replacement.

Happy Birthday, Tukes! This is giving me a serious donut attack!

Too funny, and fun!

Loving the square donuts. Sprinkles make them more tasty, don't they (if you are from about 2-10 years old)?

I want to be a Grandmother just like that when I grow up.

You could write a little children's book about that experience, how heartwarming.

I enjoyed this post very much! And her brown eyes make his seem even more blue! ha! No singing? Well, it is his birthday..whatever his wants...or doesn't want, right? :)

Great pics. On the one where he's blowing out the candles, did you use an external flash, or did u adjust settings?

Ruth -- No flash. The professor has indoctrinated me... no flash ever, ever, ever which can make shooting tricky at times. I just manually adjusted the settings. ISO 800, Exposure 1/30 sec, Aperture 5.0, Focus Length 34 mm, White Balance was "incandescent".
