Our "Budget Basic" Master Bathroom

Back in the fall, just days after completing our extensive and lengthy kitchen renovation, we were unexpectedly catapulted headfirst into major bathroom renovations. While renovating both bathrooms {one at a time!} was on the agenda our original plan was to regroup and save money for a few months before beginning. On that fateful Saturday morning in late October the professor discovered a significant water leak that was slowly and thoroughly rotting our master bathroom walls from the inside out. Water leaks have a way of speeding things up... ready or not it was time to cross our fingers and do the best we could with what was available at the moment.

A spacious and luxurious master bathroom would be nice, but "budget basic" is what dictated the project; this renovation was totally based on necessity and stewardship. The renovated space is basic {no marble floors, multiple shower jets, or a deep soaking tub} but the room is so very improved I feel as though we have a $100,000 bathroom!

We chose a neutral porcelain tile with some texture that we found on clearance to use on the floors and in the showers of both bathrooms. When an affordable opportunity presented itself, for the first time in our DIY home renovating experience, we hired someone else to remove the two layers of old ceramic tile present in both bathrooms as well as install the new tile. Considering that it was the end of the semester and the holidays were looming ahead of us, this was money well spent to save valuable time.

One of our desires with the renovation was to include a double sink vanity, however the designated sink space is compact and we weren't in a position to take on the project and expense of moving pipe studs. An affordable solution came in the form of a double faucet, single basin sink and vanity from Ikea. It fits the small space perfectly and gives us the dual use that we desired, best of all we both love the sleek aesthetic and style that it contributes to the space.

We filled a previously unused alcove with a small dressing table that we purchased on sale adding another horizontal surface to the room as well as additional storage and the warmth of dark wood. The overhead cabinets are original and provide key secondary storage as the room does not have a closet.

The dressing table is quickly becoming a sweet landing place for many of my pretty baubles and bottles. This little nook makes me smile.

In the grand scheme of the renovation we're nearly finished but there are still a few improvements that we plan include as money and time allow. They are:
  • Resurface the tub.
  • Add a white porcelain tile backsplash behind the sink faucets.
  • Artwork for the focal point wall next to the toilet.
  • Replace the red shower curtain.
  • Include a small upholstered settee or ottoman at the dressing table.
All in all we love the space and are quite happy with "budget basic"!

Later this week I'll show the hall bathroom. We renovated the two rooms simultaneously which was an adventure to say the very least!

The whole thing makes me smile!! Looks FABULOUS!! Y'all did great. Such good taste. I'm never able to be so orderly and put-together in my tastes. I saw an amazing red dot mobile y'all would love in my Real Simple magazine...thought of it for that wall that needs art...though I know there's probably not room for a mobile. I'm rambling.

Looks GREAT!

Oh, Christian! So, so inspiring. And I loooooove the dual faucet sink. Perfection.

We have a similar master bathroom issue (although I pray our rot and mildew issue is not nearly as drastic!), and I think we may attempt a very 'budget basic' fix-up method as well. (Any suggestions for working with peach and teal tile, a'la mid-1980's??)

And your vanity. What a treasured space! I bet you both love walking in there in the morning.

Looks great! I would love to redo our bathroom with some tile on the floors and tub (right now the tub tile is a icky yellow). I don't know if you're looking for neutral for your shower curtain, but here's one that I like:

It's gorgeous! I LOVE that sink!

I'm afraid if it were my dressing table, though, I'd never get the lid lifted because it would be too tempting to set things on "for just a minute". Never met a horizontal surface I didn't like.

Yesterday's post ... I am doing a Bible study on the names of Jehovah. Would you believe Jehovah-Mekoddishkem was this weekend's chapter for study?

Beautiful!! Well done! As an experienced renovator and budgeter, I can really appreciate your lovely bathroom. I LOVE that Ikea sink - they have the best fixes for small, stylish spaces. And you got a dressing table in there as well?! That is spacious, in my book!
Before I read your text, I thought the red shower curtain was a punch of color and I actually liked it. Maybe you should keep it for winter months when you need a bit of warm color. A white textured one would be nice and cool looking against your warm tile in hot weather. And a tiled shower is just the height of luxury, in my opinion.
Now, a question about hanging art in the bathroom: I too have a blank wall that I want to hang something on, but I'm worried that the humidity would not be good for traditional pictures. Your thoughts?

Anna, I cannot resist (because I love color so much!!): I would keep everything as white and neutral as possible, and then add some orange (darker than the peach because I don't like peach) or a shade or two different than the teal, whichever color you wanted to emphasize (I wouldn't do both since they're already combined in the tile, which sounds cool to me, but I know that's not everyone's thing!). That way, your bathroom would not be too busy, but would feel tied together.

I love discussing renovating when it's not going on in MY house :)

OH Christian!!! I am SO very happy for you! I know this has been a long time coming and how wonderful to have it pretty much completed before your precious baby makes her grand entrance! I have a smile spread across my face as I imagine you coming home from the hospital and getting to recover, and hopefully pamper yourself, in such a well designed space. Hooray for you all!

It looks great. We are in the planning stage of our bathroom remodel. Thanks for the inspiration. I love the tile!

It's wonderful! And it is SO you! I love the plant stand giving a bit privacy to the toilet, too. Lovely redo!

So fun to see pictures of this completed project! I really like how you have the plants as a divider for the toilet space. Genius. The other day when you had the red background for the photo I guessed it was a shower curtain. I once went to a friend's to have her take photos of me for a singing audition and we used her shower curtain as the backdrop. I like the red.

The double faucet sink is a really neat solution. I've never seen or heard of one but I like the way it looks.

Fantastic all around! Praise God for seeing you through the adventure. :) Kelly

My first thought was "you got an Ikea sink!" I love the way they make things that fit small spaces perfectly. The tile work is fantastic and I'm in love with your vanity.

I love how you did the coloring in there, very neutral with bright splashed. Fantastic!

Uh-oh, Mod Mama, if you don't watch out, you might just launch an interior decorating business from this blog! What a touch you have!

I agree with the other comments about the plant providing some privacy for the toilet. So nice for a shared bathroom, even between a married couple. What a fantastic idea!

Christian,

You may not have spent a bundle, but the bathroom looks fabulous. You guys did an excellent job and I think you should be quite pleased. The deep sink is nice and I think the double faucet idea was a good idea. You both can use the area at the same time.

You’re killing me w/IKEA. Now that I want to go to one, there aren’t any near me like they were before our move.

I like the red shower curtain. Are you getting a newer one because of wear or are you changing the color? It is striking and livens up the space.

Thank you all for your wonderful comments... each one has made me smile. We are thrilled with how nicely the bathroom turned out.

Regarding the shower curtain... the color is great, but it is quite old and is actually showing quite a bit of wear and tear. Typically when it comes to the color palette in the bathroom I prefer neutrals and white, but the red splash of color has been fun. I'm not sure which route I want to go in replacing it, and I'm not in too big of a hurry so we'll just wait for the right thing {at the right price} to come along.
