Afternoon Snacking

Around 3:30 or 4:00 in the afternoon the boys start looking for a snack. Usually they're satisfied with a piece of fruit or some raisins and nuts, but sometimes they're really feeling munchy. That's when I reach for the popcorn.

I'm not a fan of the kind cooked in the microwave and we don't have a popper so we pop it the old fashioned way, in a big pot on the stove top. With just a bit of melted butter and a good shaking of salt it's a simple, sugar-free snack.

Of course, there are days {especially these days} when I'm we're feeling a bit stir crazy and {gasp} grumpy and tired... that's when we jump in the car and zip up the road for happy hour at Sonic. After all, what goes better with popcorn than a half-price fountain drink?!

Christian,

We used to be microwave popcorn eaters, but stopped quite a few years ago. Now, we're stove top lovin' poppers too. It has gotten so bad that we usually pop some every single night. We even have a family song for when it's popping and only Daddy pops the corn. It has become an accidental family tradition. If there are any leftovers, then the children usually eat it as a snack (I only like fresh off the stove) the next day.

I forgot about ½ price at Sonic. We may have to try that one afternoon.

Yum. I do popcorn on the stove too...plain with a little salt :). I love how you make a simple thing as afternoon snack such a sweet idyllic moment. It's beautiful!

We cooked popcorn on the stove top for a long time, until finally, my husband got me an air-popper. I love it. We're big popcorn fans. We're also fans of happy hour Sonic drinks, but save this for special outings and very hot days.

Isn't sonic happy hour a fun thing?

Most of my kids love "pop pop," as CA calls it...one only likes the kind that's super salty/butter (think movie popcorn). :-)

I HEART Sonic happy hour!!! It's wonderful! And this post cracked me up because I JUST took pics of our hot air popper in action (that I bought a few weeks ago) to blog about how much we are loving it! (We were popping with oil on the stove...but the clean up...I know it's just one pot, but there were times I didn't pop just to avoid the clean up.)

Happy snacking/happy hour to you!

I love that you popcorn the old fashion way. The chemicals used to coat the inside of microwave popcorn bags are so bad for you.

Hooray for stovetop popcorn!! I love it! It's our supper every Sunday night and a few times inbetween. And I agree - something carbonated or juicy is soooo good with popcorn.
I also sprinkle mine with nutritional yeast - it has a buttery flavor we love and it's easier than melting butter (I always look for easy!).

Is it strange that I've never popped popcorn in a pot??

Must try.
