A Sneak Peek

The slate floor in the kitchen is finished and we are slowly piecing the room back together.

While the rest of the house is still in an uproar {we are mid-installation with the hardwoods!}, I'm happily rediscovering peaceful corners that I love.

And laundry, I am doing a lot of laundry, because, really, there is no such thing as an empty clothes basket when the washer and dryer have spent a week in the dining room completely disconnected!

But, oh, how we are loving our new floors; the mess and the chaos are completely worth it! There's more photos coming once we muddle ourselves out of the current dust and noise...

Beautiful, both the floors AND an empty laundry basket. Life is good!

Very nice! Are all the walls in your house the same color? It looks very calm and a nice background to your mod decor. What color are your walls?

Anonymous -- Yes, we have painted the entire interior of our house one color... actually two colors because each room has one wall that is painted a slightly darker shade as an accent. We used Sherwin-Williams "Useful Gray" and "Gray Area" -- we like warm, earthy gray.

Love the warm grays! So modern and homey at the same time. Same reason I like natural surfaces like slate and wood - natural with a touch of modern. Here in San Diego, I have Mexican inspired tile which can be a challenge to avoid decorating without looking like we live inside an "On the Border" restaurant, but otherwise it's so gorgeous and we get so many compliments. I must admit to cursing my tile floor yesterday, however, after I dropped a glass jar and sent shards flying everywhere. Let's hope you're not as clumsy as I am! =) Can't wait to see your hardwood floors!

Hurrah! So exciting! You must be loving the process of re-ordering and enjoying the fruits of your labors. Gorgeous!

(And as a mama who also went 1.5 weeks with no washer -it broke- I can sympathize with the chore in front of you!)

Oh wow, christian, it looks amazing! You guys are really putting a lot of great resale value into your home (not to mention making it oh-so-wonderful for yourselves while you're there!) . . .

On a completely different note. . . could you possibly tell me the length of that darling little knit peapod you had for F? I just made one that is only 15 inches (followed a pattern) and am baffled how they could ever fit in there, even when newborns!

love your house -- can't wait to see the rest!

Amanda -- I measured the peapod and it is 16 inches long -- that is from the top edge straight down the center to the bottom. The top quarter to half inch of edge rolls over so it's more like 15.5 inches long.

It's definitely newborn sized and should be noted that Sister was a small newborn, under six pounds. Her peapod worked great for her for several weeks but if she had been an 8 or 9 pound baby she probably wouldn't have been able to use it much longer than the first week.

If you're making one for your baby girl you should probably consider how tall your husband is and maybe add an inch or two...

Gorgeous floors! There is just something both warm and cool about slate. I think you made a very good choice :)
