A House in Town

"She had just finished her tea and her acorn cup and saucer, neatly washed, stood on a shelf above the stove. A bed of discarded pullets' feathers covered with a bright quilt of patched sumac leaves was ready for pleasant dreams. Miss Hickory's house was made of corncobs, notched, neatly fitted together and glued. It stood beneath the lilac bush that was so sweet and purple when in bloom, so thickly green and cheerful with birds all summer long. If one had to live in town, Miss Hickory had always said, take a house under a lilac bush." from Miss Hickory by Carolyn Sherwin Bailey
Hot summer afternoons {oh yes, they have arrived} and long summer evenings are made for reading aloud. The boys and I are pleasantly making our way through Miss Hickory, whose quaint, cozy home has convinced me that I must add "lilac bush" to my wish list for our mod'ish, little house 'o dreams. Certainly a house next to a lilac bush would be almost as pleasant as a house under a lilac bush.
Almost. And, that is good enough for me. One can't be too demanding, after all!

LOVE the way you write!!! You make me smile...BIG! We'll have to check out Miss Hickory.
Then you would have LOVED the past 2 weeks up here (even though it has rained 8 days out of 10). Lilac is our state flower for good reason.
Lilac loves cold. After an intense winter they are especially lush, some "shrubs" are 10+ feet tall, a great crowded purple bouquet.

Oh Christian, we have a lilac bush! The back fence is hidden by them. I was thankful for them before but now I am even more so.
And next time you're at the library please see if they have Miss Suzy. I have not read Miss Hickory but as soon as I started reading your post I thought I was reading Miss Suzy. It is a story from my childhood, a picture book. I think your boys would like the heroics in it.

I grew up with a bedroom that looked out through a lilac bush...still one of my favorite memories. Our lilacs aren't near the house here, but their blooms are on my kitchen counter and they make my day.

Blogger issues again. )-:
Lilacs are so lovely indeed. I've never been afforded the opportunity to live in your part of the county, and I'm not sure if I'd quickly adapt to such a change...but oh, for the foliage, the flowers, the green...and the porches! :)
Oh, that sounds lovely. Will you go for purple or white lilacs?
(Forgive me for being covetous of your hot summer afternoons! It's 55 degrees here and dumping buckets of rain. Blah.
The grass is always greener ... right??)
what a fab quote! exactly something I loved as a little girl and STILL love. I'll have to check out that book. I think I've read a story about Miss Hickory, but I'm not sure.
I love Miss Hickory! Great choice for summer reading!
